That Dunes is Sutrah’s debut album is somewhat mind boggling when considering the amount of technical prowess and songwriting maturity on display. Dunes is very dynamic, both within and amongst songs, and almost nothing about this is predictable. The eastern influences are quite apparent in the artwork and lyrical themes, but also woven throughout the melodies of Dunes in ways that seem genuine and integral to the music. I am at a loss to find similar bands as a means of comparison, though the fretless bass does call to mind Australia’s StarGazer, and Kevin Paradis’ drumming is easily recognizable to those familiar with his other work. This is amazing progressive death metal that needs to be absorbed over multiple sessions to be fully appreciated, and I recommend that you do just that, and right now.
